A MESSAGE FROM FAIR DIRECTOR REGINA SCOTCHIE

The WV State Social Studies Fair is undergoing some EXCITING new changes. We have made significant changes in the 7-Steps booklet, rules, and judges’ scorecard. The new scorecard will be available online by the October 20. In the meantime, as some of you have social studies fairs scheduled in the very near future, you need the information below so that your students will have a wider range of possibilities with which to research and prepare their social studies presentations. The divisions, categories, and types will remain the same. You may refer to the booklet for guidance in helping your students decide on the type and category they would like to pursue, and of course for research and presentation guidance.

We are all very excited to offer these changes to our students, but it will take extra care on everyone’s part to make these changes fair to all students. Some students will choose to complete a traditional project, and that is perfectly fine. The scorecards will be focused on the content of the project, NOT on “bells and whistles”. We want to afford the students the opportunity to use their own creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving skills in new ways to research and present their material. Because we are providing these opportunities at the state fair, students will need to be allowed to use the same type of equipment at the school and county fairs to research and present their projects.
